Course formats for students
An essential component of university education is engagement in science and research. Therefore, all students of the Faculty of Medicine are required to apply the theoretical knowledge they acquire in this field in practical settings.
The mandatory genetic engineering modules provide students with insights into key laboratory techniques used in basic biomedical research and familiarize them with the working practices of a research laboratory. In addition, the laboratory offers an excellent environment for conducting experimental research projects as part of a master’s thesis.
Module M1b Research Practical: Basic Methods of Genetic Engineering
The aim is to acquire practical skills in common molecular biology methods and the handling of pipettes.
The following methods are carried out in this module:
- Column chromatography
- Polymerase chain reaction
- Photometric measurement of optical density
- Gel electrophoresis
Module M1c Research Practical: Gene Technology II
The module builds on the skills taught in module M1b.
This internship covers the following working methods:
- Cloning
- Transformation of cells
- Selection and analysis of clones
- Genome-wide sequencing using next generation sequencing
