The task of the Ethics Committee – EK MED is to review and assess the ethical permissibility of research projects that are based on studies involving human subjects, samples taken from human subjects or research with personal data from test subjects or patients.
The activities of the EK MED are based on the provisions of the Universities Act 2002 (UG) and the Federal Hospitals and Health Resorts Act (KAKuG) as well as other relevant federal and provincial provisions. It assesses the projects submitted to it, in particular taking into account the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki, the EC-GCP Note for Guidance, the ICH-GCP Guidelines, the regulations of the AMG, the MPG, the GTG, the BSG, the KAKuG, the TirKAG, the Patient Charter and other relevant regulations such as ISO 14155-1 and ISO 14155-2 for their ethical safety.
The Ethics Committee can also issue an opinion on other biomedical research projects not mentioned above and on medical-ethical questions submitted to the committee by doctors in their respective areas of responsibility.

The EK MED deals with

• Reviewing submitted clinical research projects (internal/external).
• Assessment of all Master’s theses at the SFU MED.
• Statement on medical-ethical issues.
• Obtaining specialist expertise if required.
